Macrame Knots

Let’s learn some basic macrame knotting techniques to get you started on your own Macrame projects.

Overhand Knot

This is one of the easiest and most common knots to do. You probably do it every day without realising it.

We commonly use these knots in macramé for finishing off the cords at the end of the project to stop the cords unravelling and to give it a nice effect.

• Step 1: Make a bend in the rope and cross over.
• Step 2: Put end through loop formed.

 

Square Knot

A common and very important knot to know for macrame. It is also used in jewellery making to create the shamballa bracelet.

There are many forms or variations of this knot. The one featured here is the Left Square Knot due to the fact that the head faces left. It uses two working cords and two filler cords.

Make sure your cords are secured to an object or tied together to begin learning.

• Step 1: Place the left working cord over both of the filler cords heading right, then pass it under the right working cord.
• Step 2: Move the right working cord under the two filler cords and up through the loop formed in step 1.
• Step 3: Hold the filler cords firmly as you tighten the knot and move it to the desired position.
• Step 4: Place the right working cord (note the cords have switched sides due to the first knot) over both of the filler cords heading left, then pass it under the left working cord.
• Step 5: Move the left working cord under the two filler cords and up through the loop formed in step 4.
• Step 6: Tighten the knot.
• Repeat Steps 1 to 6 until desired length is reached.
